Ask any older adult what one of their biggest fears is and they will likely say falls. In 2013 about one in every 50 Wisconsin residents aged 65 and older was hospitalized for a fall-related injury and abo ut one out of every 25 visited the emergency room for a fall-related injury. Sandy Tryon with the Fond du Lac County Aging Disability Resource Center says falls continue to be the leading cause of unintentional injury and death among Wisconsin’s older adults. Dr. Scott Suprenand with Wink Chiropractic says falls are also a costly health issue. In 2013 the total charges associated with fall-related hospital visits were at least $674 million. Suprenand and Tryon say community based programs along with public and private health care practices can reduce the likelihood of falls among older people. The Fond du Lac County Falls Prevention Coalition is hosting a Fall Prevention Awareness Day today. The event runs from 12:30pm to 4:30pm at the Lighthouse Christian Church on South National Avenue. Its free and open to the public.
