10-8-14 gas leak quickly brought under control in downtown fdl

Nobody was injured following a natural gas leak in downtown Fond du lac Tuesday afternoon.  Fire chief Pete O’Leary says construction crews working on the Retlaw Theatre reconstruction project accidentally hit a gas main shortly before 2pm.  Businesses in the area were evacuated and a portion of Main Street was blocked to traffic.  There was a strong odor of natural gas in the air.  O’Leary says initially there was a concern that a couple of construction workers may have been trapped on the roof of the building.  Thosse workers were quickly accounted for.  The gas was turned off and the situation was brought under control in less than a half hour.
