10-9-14 fire prevention week

todayOctober 9, 2014

It’s  Fire Prevention Week, and the Fond du Lac Fire Department is joining forces with the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to promote the theme, “Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month!”   Fire Chief Pete O’Leary says this message is to remind us that we need working smoke alarms to give us the time to get out safely.   According to the latest NFPA research, almost five million households still do not have any smoke alarms.  Three out of five home fire deaths resulted from fires in properties without working smoke alarmsThe risk of dying in reported home structure fires is cut in half in homes with working smoke alarms.  O’Leary says it’s a good idea to install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each Sleeping area and on every level of the home and test your smoke alarms every month.  An open house is being held Thursday at 5pm at the Fire department featuring a live fire demonstration to show the impact a fire has on a residential home.  The firefighters will be showing the importance of the “Jaws of Life” during vehicle extrication, and Flight for Life will be there to answer questions on EMS transports.
