It didn’t take a Fond du Lac jury long to convict two Milwaukee men in a retail theft case this week. Silas Hampton and Vance Burnside were on trial accused of stealing nearly $900 worth of merchandise from Walmart in Fond du Lac. District attorney Eric Toney says the trial proceeded even though both defendants failed to show up in court. “I’ve never had that happen before and in talking with the other attorneys in the office none of them had had that experience and I don’t believe the court had either so it was pretty unique circumstances,” Toney told WFDL news. Toney says police and Walmart security believe both defendants were experienced thieves. Hampton and Burnside will be sentenced at a later date provided police can find them.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
