Several Fond du Lac area businesses and individuals are being recognized for their outstanding contributions to the community. The 33rd annual Marian University Business & Industry awards dinner was held Tuesday night at Marian’s Stayer Center. Alliance Laundry Systems, LLC, of Ripon received the Business of the Year award. Established in 1908, Alliance Laundry Systems, LLC, is a leading designer, manufacturer and marketer of commercial laundry equipment used in laundromats, multi-housing laundries and on-premise laundries. The company has more than 1,800 employees. The Entrepreneur of the Year award goes to Wisnet.com of Fond du Lac a national branding, application, development and Internet hosting company. The Economic Development award was presented to Con-way Freight of Fond du Lac. Special Achievement awards were given to two organizations: Children’s Museum of Fond du Lac and the THELMA Sadoff Center for the Arts. This year the George Becker Business Spirit award was presented posthumously to Gary M. Smith. Smith was the third generation of the Smith family to lead C.D. Smith Construction. A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
