The Fond du Lac fire chief says it could have been a lot worse. Chief Pete O’Leary says a fire that damaged a duplex apparently started when a cigarette was discarded on a wood deck. “We think a cigarette may have thrown out underneath the deck and there’s a lot of leaves and things like that. So its a careless mistake,” O’Leary told WFDL news. O’Leary says the good news is everybody got out safely and the smoke alarms were working.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
