The Waupun fire chief says its fortunate a man wasn’t injured in a fire that significantly damaged his home this week. Chief B.J. DeMaa says the smoke alarms were not working. “Its fortunate in that there were no working smoke alarms in the residence,” DeMaa told WFDL news. DeMaa says an electrical hot plate to warm food was accidentally left on and probably started the fire.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
