11-18-14 fox river invasive species

todayNovember 18, 2014

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Some experts are concerned that a plan to allow boats to bypass a lock on the Fox River will further the spread of invasive species.  The Fox River Navigational System Authority has proposed a $3.8 million transfer station that will remove invasive species that attach to boats and allow them to move around a lock between Lake Michigan and Lake Winnebago. Although state law currently requires a lock near Kaukauna to remain closed to stop the spread of invasive species, the agency hopes to get around the restriction. An environmental assessment by the state Department of Natural Resources found the project would increase the risk of invasive species in a system that makes up 17 percent of the state’s inland waters.
