The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office says an incident over the weekend shows how dangerous ice conditions are on Lake Winnebago. Five fishermen were rescued after becoming trapped when a large crack developed on the ice. Sheriff’s Sergeant Jeff Bonack says what appears to be solid, stable ice can and will open up depending on the wind direction. “The situation we were given yesterday (Sunday) I’ve been on the (Sheriff’s) dive team for a number of years, this was certainly the trickiest, probably the most dangerous one that we were on,” Bonack told WFDL news. “We ran into everything from okay ice, to horrible ice, to chunk ice, to water.”

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
