Local law enforcement hopes the reconstruction on a dangerous stretch of Highway 26 will help reduce serious injury and fatal accidents. Sheriff’s captain Rick Olig says construction will begin next spring on Highway 26 near Willow Creek Road. Olig says that stretch of 26 has been the scene of several serious traffic crashes over the years. “If you look at the thousands of cars that go through there, versus the number of crashes its concerning, but thousands of cars made it through without any issue so that tells you that the driver factor is part of that also,” Olig told WFDL news. Olig says when the project begins the hope is that traffic will shift to Highway 41.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
