A nearly six hour armed standoff in Waupun has ended peacefully. A 22 year old Waupun man was taken into custody without incident around 2pm Tuesday. Waupun police were called to a residence at 8am Tuesday for a report of an armed man who had barricaded himself in the home and was threatening to harm himself. The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s SWAT team was called shortly after 8am. SWAT Team negotiators made contact with the man and he eventually surrendered without any shots being fired. Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Mark Strand says detective Nate Lamotte began negotiations with the subject within the first hour. “They established a pretty good relationship and sometimes it would be good and sometimes it would go south and after quite a while they eventually convinced him that probably it was best to give himself up to our people,” Strand told WFDL news. “We’ll take that all day long.” Waupun Deputy Police Chief Scott Louden says its a relief that everybody’s safe. “We got the person into custody to get him the help that he needs and also that it was resolved with nobody being injured.” Investigators say the man was apparently depressed over the break-up with his girlfriend.
