The coordinator of Drug Free Communities of Fond du Lac County says she thinks the state legislature is doing the right thing by being proactive by considering a ban on powdered alcohol before the product hits the shelves in Wisconsin. Ellen Sorenson says she wasn’t even aware the product existed until it made the news this week. The owner of the Arizona-based company says he created Palcohol to avoid lugging liquor bottles on hiking trips. Mark Phillips says on his website people are focusing on the perceived and misinformed negative aspects of the product. Sorenson says there are too many unknowns at this point. Sorenson says she’s also concerned about the product getting into the hands of underage persons. A senate committee is expected to hold a hearing on the bill this month.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
