(WASHINGTON, DC) – Congressman Glenn Grothman (R-WI) attended his first State of the Union address on Tuesday night as the new representative for Wisconsin’s 6th District. Grothman issued this statement following the President’s speech:
“I enjoyed being present at tonight’s State of the Union address, I was somewhat disappointed that the President didn’t address feasible solutions for many of the big problems the country is facing. I was hoping that six years in office would prepare President Obama to provide suggestions for reining in out-of-control spending, which is placing record debt onto our children and grandchildren and causing an uncertainty which is preventing the economy from reaching its full potential. I was also hoping for suggestions in reducing government regulation after years of adding new rules which choke America’s businesses. Furthermore, we have a broken welfare state which is causing more and more Americans to not participate in our country’s economy and penalizes parents who get married. Finally, it was nice to hear President Obama recognize the special fiscal challenges facing parents in today’s economy. I only wish he would have provided more consideration to the hardworking parents who are already making financial sacrifices to stay home and raise their children. This speech did not provide all the details of President Obama’s actual budget, but I’ve recently been invited to the White House and hope to have the chance to address some of these issues with the President at that time.”
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin released the following statement on President Obama’s State of the Union address:
“Tonight the President focused squarely on how we need to move our economy forward and strengthen the middle class. While we have made a lot of progress coming back, in large part due to the President’s policies, going forward both parties in Congress need to work on continued progress instead of partisan politics. “We need to have both parties focused on creating stronger economic growth and shared prosperity because our greatest challenge is making sure a growing economy is working for everyone, not just those at the top. That is why I support the President for offering plans to make the wealthy pay their share of taxes so we can cut taxes for the middle class and make higher education more affordable. “There is no question that our national economy is moving forward, but unfortunately our Wisconsin economy continues to lag behind so I will continue work across party lines to build a strong Made In Wisconsin manufacturing economy and close the innovation deficit by investing in science, research and technology. Both parties should be able to agree that we need stronger economic growth that reaches more people, so we need to work together to make sure everyone has a fair shot to get ahead.”
