1-21-15 wi supreme court-chief justice selection process

todayJanuary 21, 2015

The director of a government watchdog group says he believes a proposal to change the way the state Supreme Court chief justice is selected is politically motivated.  The state senate passed the Republican-backed constitutional amendment Tuesday.  The Assembly was to take it up Thursday.  Curently the member of the the Supreme Court with the most seniority serves as chief justice.  The amendment would change that to have the seven member court pick its leader.  Common Cause in Wisconsin director Jay Heck says it appears the change is targeting liberal Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson, who has had the position for 18 years.  Supporters say its bringing Wisconsin in line with 22 other states that have a peer selection process.  Heck says that’s fine, but questions why Republican legislators are in such a hurry to have the measure go before voters on the April 7th spring ballot?
