The Fond du Lac Fire chief says he supports legislation that would ban the sale of so-called novelty lighters to children. Fire chief Pete O’Leary made his feelings known this week in a letter to Fond du Lac lawmakers. O’Leary says the novelty lighters are dangerous because they often look like toys and can be mistaken by both kids and adults. For several years students at Pittsville Elementary School in central Wisconsin have been partnering with their community’s fire department to create the ban. The students became involved after a classmate was killed in a fire believed to have been caused by a lighter.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
