RACINE, Wis. (AP) — A Racine lawmaker wants to repeal Wisconsin’s 48-hour waiting period to buy handguns. State Senator Van Wanggaard says the original intent of the waiting period was to give gun dealers enough time to complete a background check, but they can now be done nearly instantly. Wanggaard says the 48-hour waiting period now amounts to a “time tax.”

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
