3-5-15 democratic legislator critical of governor’s plan to merge agencies

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A Democratic lawmaker on the Legislature’s finance committee isn’t happy with Republican Gov. Scott Walker’s plans for a new economic development agency.  Walker’s state budget calls for merging the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation and the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority into the new Forward Wisconsin Development Authority. The governor’s budget calls for replacing both agencies’ boards, which includes legislators, with a single board of private business people.  Sen. Jon Erpenbach told WEDC and WHEDA officials during a hearing Wednesday the set up offers no accountability.  WEDC got off to a rough start. Audits in 2012 and 2013 showed the agency lost track of $12 million in overdue loans and failed to follow state law and gave money to ineligible projects between its creation in July 2011 and June 2012.
