New Holstein school officials are in shock following the sudden death of School Superintendent William Van Meer. New Holstein police chief Brian Reedy says the 49 year old Van Meer died Thursday, March 5, of natural causes. The cause of death has not been announced and an autopsy is being conducted. Van Meer has been superintendent since 2011, replacing retired superintendent Joe Wieser. His wife, Tina Van Meer, is superintendent of Gibraltar Area Schools in Fish Creek. The couple has one son.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
