The Fond du Lac city council is exploring a potential ordinance that would allow beekeeping in the city. The council discussed the issue at their meeting Wednesday night and may consider an ordinance at a future meeting. Don Butzke has beehives near Campbellsport, but would like to raise the bees at his residence in Fond du Lac. “Its a great idea, I’d love to see more people become beekeepers,” Butzke told AM 1170 WFDL’s Between the Lines program. “I think it would be important to have urban beekeeping.” Butzke says studies show the survival rate for bees is higher in urban areas compared to rural areas. Butzke says beekeeping is a fun, inexpensive hobby. He says honey bees are not aggressive. City attorney Deb Hoffmann said beekeeping is allowed in Madison, Germantown, Little Chute and Watertown in Wisconsin. UW-Fond du Lac offers a course on beekeeping and if an ordinance was enacted, Hoffmann said she would suggest that anyone seeking to keep bees in the city complete the three-session UW-FDL training.
