A group of 15 Waupun High School students are getting a crash course this week in the blues. Grammy nominee harmonica virtuoso, Billy Branch, has been rehearsing with students in preparation for a concert Saturday night at the Waupun City Hall Auditorium. Branch says he wants the students to understand that the blues is the root of all of America’s music. “For most of the students its their first experience with blues,” Branch said. “Most of them didn’t even really know what blues was. They’re a little reserved, but I think by the end of the week they’ll really get into it.” Students have been learning about writing songs, learning old blues standards, along with developing their musical performance skills. The concert starts at 7:30pm Saturday where students will perform back up harmonica during Branch’s performance. The CBS evening news is in Waupun to tape Friday’s final rehearsal.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
