Fond du lac area residents who live near Lake Winnebago and as far east as St. Peter got a jolt Friday night after hearing what sounded like an explosion. Fond du lac police say an old hand grenade found at a residence earlier Friday was detonated at Lakeside Park west shortly after 10:30pm Friday. The grenade was found by relatives of the homeowner at a home in 100 block of 21st Street. Police called the U.S. military bomb disposal squad to detonate the grenade. The shock waves from the detonation caused homes as far away as the east shore of Lake Winnebago to shake.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
