The author of a provision inserted into the budget says it will give Waupun residents more time to become educated about new technology that will ultimately replace tower guards working overnight at the Waupun Correctional Institution. State senator Rick Gudex the Waupun prison is unique because it is located near the downtown, in the middle of the city. “There’s a lot at stake when you start talking about residential housing being right across the street from the prison,” Gudex told WFDL news. “I understand the prison was there first but there was really a lack of education going on, educating the people about what the changes are, how its going to impact their community. There was really nothing that came out of the Department of Corrections in that regard,” Gudex said. Gudex says the budget measure delays implementation of new video technology and other security upgrades to replace 3rd shift guards for 18 months. During that time Gudex says he hopes the prison and community leaders hold a series of public forums to better inform Waupun residents about the change.
