Despite concerns from city staff the Fond du Lac city council is directing staff to draft an ordinance that would allow so-called pedal pubs in the city. The Wisconsin Legislature passed a law recently that legalized pedal pubs in Wisconsin. Pedal pubs, also known as quadricycles, are multi-person bicycles that can hold up to 12 riders and a driver that steers. The new law allows each passenger to consume up to 36 fluid ounces of alcohol during their ride. Council president LeeAnn Lorrigan says the entire council seems to be supportive of the idea. City attorney Deb Hoffman told the city council last night a local business owner has asked about bringing a pedal pub to Fond du Lac. Hoffman says city staff is concerned about safety, how to avoid underage drinkers from using this as a way to drink, noise, appropriateness of pedal pubs in residential districts or family parks and where riders would be able to use restrooms. Lorrigan says she thinks it could work here. Lorrigan says she hopes the council can vote on an ordinance at a meeting sometime this summer.
