6-11-15 waupun police chief supports allowing off duty cops to carry weapons in schools

todayJune 10, 2015

The Waupun police chief says he supports a bill that would allow off-duty and retired officers to carry guns in schools.  Current state law generally bans people from possessing guns on school grounds and within 1,000 feet of a school.  “I think this was a problem with the law when it was first developed,”  Waupun police chief Dale Heeringa told WFDL news.  “With a law enforcement officer, say myself, if I was on duty I could walk onto a school premises with a firearm by doing my job.  If I’m offf-duty and when to my son’s sporting event at school it would be illegal for me to carry a firearm in that school.”   Heeringa  says its important that if retired cops are allowed to carry a gun on school grounds that they are up to date with their firearms training.
