With more than a year to go before the election a Ripon College political science professor says he is surprised that so many Republican candidates have announced they are running for president. So far there are 12 announced candidates with at least four more Republicans expected to announce in the days and weeks ahead. Professor Marty Farrell says some of the candidates may be positioning themselves as a potential running mate or cabinet appointment. “Well I think certainly on the Republican side I don’t ever remember and looking at the records I don’t see that there’s ever been that many,” Farrell told WFDL news. Wiconsin governor Scott Walker is expected to make an official announcement next month. Farrell says his success may ultimately hinge on how he fares in upcoming debates.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
