MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Republican Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald says he still does not have the votes to pass the state budget and that Republicans have yet to reach an agreement on several key issues. The budget-writing Joint Finance Committee has not met since May 29 and has no meetings scheduled. Governor Scott Walker says a framework of a budget deal is likely in the next few days, though Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says the governor is “more optimistic” than he was.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
