A Ripon college political science professor says governor Scott Walker enters the race at a time when there is no real clear frontrunner among the Republican candidates. Professor Marty Farrell says that’s why it will be important for Walker to get out of the gate quickly, starting with the Iowa caucuses. “That means with a wide-open field and Scott Walker’s conservative record will serve him very well in primary or caucus states such as Iowa and South Carolina,” Farrell said. Farrell says Walker is certainly battle tested in Wisconsin. “He has won three times statewide office in Wisconsin, also Milwaukee County Executive. That’s not easy for a Republican.”

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
