An Oakfield man accused of assaulting,strangling and holding a woman against her will has posted $5000 cash bail. Fifty one year old Jay Smith is charged with battery, strangulation, false imprisonment, intimidation of a witness, and disorderly conduct. According to a criminal complaint, Smith repeatedly punched and kicked the woman striking her an estimated 100 times. She told authorities Smith became angry when he could not perform sexually. The woman said Smith refused to allow her to leave and threatened to kill her. The woman said Smith finally agreed to give her a ride back to her residence, where she called 911.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
