Winnebago County Executive Mark Harris will make the official announcement today that he is a candidate for the 18th Senate District. Harris will made the announcement at the Winnebago County Courthouse and will also make a stop in Fond du Lac. Harris is challenging Republican state senator Rick Gudex of Fond du Lac who will be finishing his first term in office next year. In a press release Harris says he has devoted his career to serving the people of the Fox Valley and is in his third term as Winnebago County executive. Harris says he has worked to reduce county spending while maintaining services through common sense budgeting. Harris says if he is elected he will work to reverse cuts to public schools and the university system while investing in infrastructure and giving small businesses and entrepreneurs the support they need to create jobs. Harris was defeated by Glenn Grothman in the race for the 6th District Congressional seat. Gudex was elected to the state senate in 2012 winning by just 500 votes.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
