Political observers say the 18th Senate district race will be the top race for Wisconsin Democrats in the 2016 election. Winnebago County Executive Mark Harris announced this week that he is challenging Republican state senator Rick Gudex of Fond du lac. Wispolitics.com editor J.R. Ross says after winning in 2012 by just 500 votes Gudex would be considered vulnerable. “Right now its the number one target for Democrats, partly because when you look at the map around Wisconsin there aren’t many opportunities for pick ups (seats) for Democrats,” Ross told AM 1170 WFDL’s Bertween the Lines program. “There are a couple seats that lean Republican that they’ll take shots at but this one its an odd seat because in a gubenatorial year its decently Republican. In a presidential year its much more of a swing seat.”

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
