9-18-15 state superintendent calls gop proposal an “attack on democracy”

todaySeptember 18, 2015

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin’s elected state superintendent says a Republican effort to make the position a partisan appointment is an “attack at the heart of our democracy and our state’s history.”   Tony Evers made the comment in prepared remarks he delivered Thursday in his annual state of education speech at the Capitol.  He blasts a proposed constitutional amendment released this week that would give the governor the power to appoint the state superintendent, rather than leaving it up to voters every four years.  Evers is up for re-election in 2017, the soonest the constitutional change could be put before voters for approval. A campaign consultant says he plans to seek a third term.  Evers says the measure would “re-politicize a battle around public education.”
