The Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer admits she was surprised to hear about the latest outbreak of the bubonic plague. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced recently that a person in that state apparently contracted the plague after visiting Colorado. Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says while the plague is thought of as a disease of the past, it has never completely gone away, but is also no longer a death sentence of caught and treated early. Between 1970 and 2012 the majority of human plague cases have been in New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
