MADISON, Wis. (AP) — State officials and legislators are not offering many details to support a handful of anecdotes they say justify overhauling Wisconsin’s civil service system. Representative Jim Steineke and Senator Roger Roth plan to introduce a bill next week that would reshape hiring rules for non-political appointees. Steineke, Roth and Governor Scott Walker all have justified the moves by telling vague stories of misbehaving state employees.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
