MILWAUKEE (AP) — Three dozen convicts are being freed in Wisconsin because of a change to federal prison sentence calculations for drug crimes. The 36 inmates are among thousands nationwide who re having their prison sentences reduced as a result of the change to drug sentencing guideline calculations made last year by the U.S. Sentencing Commission. Mike Klug is chief U.S. probation officer for the Eastern District in Wisconsin. He says the majority of the 36 inmates to be released Friday are in the Milwaukee area. The inmates have been in halfway houses. Inmates in eastern Wisconsin are getting an average of 21 months cut from their sentences of about 10 years. Nationally, the average is 23 months.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
