Sources inside the Waupun Correctional Institution say a correctional officer was severely beaten by an inmate. The incident was reported Friday afternoon during second shift. Sources tell WFDL news the female officer was dragged into a secluded area and physically assaulted. She was transported to the hospital, but the extent of her injuries is unknown. A DOC spokesman says the victim “will be fine.” The inmate was working as a swamper, that’s an inmate who is able to move throughout the institution for duties such as cleaning and maintenance.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
