MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says newly elected House Speaker Paul Ryan’s call for bipartisanship has prompted him to reach out to Wisconsin Democrats on a higher education student loan bill. Vos said in the spirit of “wiping the slate clean” he will allow the bill to be referred to the budget committee where it could be examined more closely. But Vos says the measure as introduced “is not ready for prime time.”

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
