WASHINGTON (AP) — Two of the GOP’s rising young stars made similar calculations on the way to political advancement: Both abandoned efforts to pass a comprehensive immigration overhaul. The about-faces by new House Speaker Paul Ryan and presidential candidate Marco Rubio underscore the GOP’s difficulties with the issue of immigration. Ryan emerged as the unity candidate for speaker of the House after offering assurances to conservatives that he would not pursue comprehensive immigration legislation with President Barack Obama in the White House.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
