11-5-15 uw oshkosh student newspaper

todayNovember 5, 2015

A UW Oshkosh journalism professor says he is hopeful a fundraising campaign will keep the student newspaper afloat.  The AdvanceTitan faces $74,000 in debt and launched a fundraising campaign a couple weeks ago.  Newspaper advisor Dr. Vince Filak says its not that students aren’t reading the newspaper.  He says studies show that more students read the paper in its printed form as opposed to digital, but the problem is where the revenue is coming from.  “The student newspapers themselves are still a vibrant part of the student campus, in terms of getting information,”  Filak told AM 1170 WFDL’s Between the Lines program.  “At the same point in time a lot of the advertising that used to come from the national ad companies, there aren’t as many of those and a lot of it has dried up.”  Filak says the newspaper has been around since 1893.   The newspaper is working with UWO administrators to develop a plan to pay off the debt $5,000 a time each February for the next decade.
