Republican state senator Rick Gudex of Fond du Lac says he supports a compromise bill that would keep two retired judges on a new ethics commission. Republicans met privately Tuesday to reach a compromise on the bill doing away with the nonpartisan Government Accountability Board, which is currently comprised of retired judges. Senator Gudex says he supports including two retired judges on the ethics commission. Gudex says he also supports an overhaul to campaign finance law. Republican Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald said Wednesday that he wouldn’t schedule the bill for a vote on Friday if he didn’t have the 17 votes necessary to pass it. Republicans hold a 19-14 majority, but one Republican isn’t available this week.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
