Following two train derailments in Wisconsin over the weekend a Demcoratic state lawmaker is introducing legislation designed to improve railroad safety. State representative Jill Billings from LaCrosse says the bipartisan measure would increase security and emergency preparedness for Wisconsin railroads. Train derailments in western Wisconsin Saturday and Watertown Sunday spilled ethanol and oil. “The majority of these derailments are caused by issues with the tracks so I want to make sure that we’re prepared,” Billings told WFDL news. “I think planning and preparedness is really important with derailments and disastorous situations.” The bill would provide for more state rail track inspectors and require railroad companies to submit prevention and response plans to the state. The bill would also provide training for local emergency first responders along railroad routes and the Office of the Commissioner of Railroads would have to submit an emergency preparedness report to the legislature.
