A truck driver from Merrill, Wisconsin has been charged in connection with a crash on Highway 23 east of Fond du Lac last summer that sent five people to the hospital. Fifty nine year old Randy Miles is charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of a controlled substance. He is free on a $5000 signature bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for January 8th. Investigators say blood tests show Miles had methamphetamine and amphetamine in his system at the time of the July 15th crash on 23 between Poplar and Tower Roads. Sheriff’s captain Rick Olig told WFDL news Miles was westbound on 23 when he tried to pass a semi, struck an SUV head on and a van that was traveling behind the SUV. Five people were injured in the crash.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
