A Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s captain says a plea deal involving a fatal car vs. motorcycle crash last summer appears to be a fair resolution. In exchange for dismissal of a felony negligient homicide charge, Travis Hartman of Ripon was instead was convicted of two misdemeanors and issued a traffic citation. Hartman was placed on probation with 60 days in jail and ordered to pay fines and restitution. Sheriff’s captain Rick Olig says he’s satisfied with the outcome. Olig says the deal doesn’t minimize the fact that a young man lost his life. “He was in fact convicted of some pretty significant charges. Yes they’re misdemeanors, but there’s 60 days in jail, two years probation, some community service and some pretty hefty fines and restitution,” Olig said. Olig says Hartman was driving a vehicle on Highway 44 in the town of Ripon when he looked down to change the radio dial and struck and killed the motorcyclist in front of him. Alcohol was not involved and Hartman has no criminal record.
