The Waupun fire chief says it doesn’t appear there were working smoke detectors in two separate residential fires that caused significant damage. But fire chief B.J. DeMaa says in both fires, at a mobile home on West Center Road Friday and a house fire on Fond du Lac Street Saturday, the occupants were not home. The cause of the mobile home fire remains under investigation, the house fire was believed to be electrical in nature.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
