The state Department of Transportation says new data supports a Highway 23 expansion project between Fond du Lac and Plymouth. A report filed in federal court defends the methodology and includes a study that the DOT says supports expansion of the highway to four lanes. The DOT says adding passing lanes may meet some traffic demands, but lacks safety measures and would reduce travel time. The land-use group 1000 Friends of Wisconsin filed a lawsuit to halt the project arguing the DOT inflated traffic counts. In May a federal judge halted the project stating DOT figures didn’t justify four lanes. No new court date has been scheduled.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
