MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The Republican leader of the state Senate’s judiciary committee has rejected a call for a hearing on allegations of inmate abuse at Wisconsin’s youth prison. The committee’s two Democrats — Lena Taylor and Fred Risser — sent a letter to Chairman Van Wanggaard on Wednesday requesting a hearing on allegations of abuse at the Copper Lake/Lincoln Hills School in Irma. Word broke last week that the state Justice Department has been investigating allegations of sexual and physical assaults of youth and evidence tampering since January. The FBI has also joined the probe.

A house fire near New Holstein claimed the life of a child. Shortly after 2am Wednesday firefighters were called to the scene on Honeymoon Hill Road near County Road T. A child in the home was pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
