On the morning of Friday, December 4th, seven area businesses opened their doors to over 50 high school students from six schools to not only show them their business but to give an overview of how they became entrepreneurs. To take the experience to the next level, Moraine Park Technical College hosted all the students and educators on campus for the afternoon. Students learned more about entrepreneurship from the inventors of The Great Plate and from a panel discussion of three high schoolers who currently operate businesses. The students also participated in a Think Tank activity to prepare them for the spring IGNITE! Youth Idea Challenge. Tiana Gaubatz from Waupun High School shared, “The IGNITE! program was an amazing experience and I would definitely want to do this again. I learned so much and found out a lot of the aspects of business. The seminar was an awesome experience and it was really fun to learn from the creator of The Great Plate, and I really liked the group activity and how we all found ways to fix our daily struggles. I would like to thank all the people who have given me this experience and I hope others can do this in the future.” Engaging high school students is a focus of IGNITE! Business Success, the new umbrella, go-to resource network of 17 local organizations supporting area entrepreneurs (www.IGNITEFondDuLacCounty.com). Currently, Wisconsin ranks 50th in the nation for the number of new businesses started each month. Entrepreneurship spurs innovative and creative thought. IGNITE! representatives reached out to area high schools to better understand what would help drive the conversation with students.
