12-23-15 debt free college

todayDecember 23, 2015

Lawmakers in 10 states including Wisconsin say they’re launching a legislative push intended to make debt-free public college a priority of the 2016 election.  Assistant Democratic leader, Katrina Shankland, from Stevens Point says that rising college debt is near crisis levels.  Shankland says Democratic legislators propose creating a debt-free college commission to study the issue and develop recommendations. She says college debt is an economic issue.  The lawmakers advocate more federal aid to states, more financial help for students and finding ways to creatively contain costs. Reducing college costs has also been a priority of Ohio’s Republican governor and state Legislature.
