1-5-16 school vouchers-disabilities

todayJanuary 5, 2016

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Federal officials have closed a long-running investigation into whether Milwaukee’s voucher school program discriminates against disabled student.  The American Civil Liberties Union and Disability Rights Wisconsin filed a complaint with the U.S. Justice Department in 2011 alleging disabled students are deterred from participating in the Milwaukee voucher program, denied admission when they do apply and expelled or forced to leave as a result of policies that don’t accommodate them.  The Justice Department sent state education officials a letter Dec. 23 noting legislators passed a law this past May creating a new disability voucher program. The agency said in the letter it has formally closed the investigation.
