The Waupun police chief says an incident last week involving a wayward drone may behoove city officials to look at placing some regulations on the flying objects. A Waupun man lost control of his drone last week when it landed inside the Waupun prison walls. Waupun police chief Dale Heeringa says while last week’s incident was an innocent mistake, it does raise serious questions about a potential security breach of the prison. “With the correctional institution, they have to be very aware of security breaches and what’s going on in their area,” Heeringa told WFDL news. “A drone theoretically could be used to do some type of illegal activity.” Heeringa says at the very least the operator used poor judgement when he was flying the drone at 1:30 in the morning. Heeringa says the incident has also raises questions about whether there needs to be a specific ordinance on the books regulating when and where you can fly drones.
