After two years in front of the lighthouse, the Fond du Lac Walleye Weekend fishing tournament weigh in is moving back to Oven Island next summer. WFDL first reported in September that city officials were working with Mercury Marine to make that happen. The cost of the permanent dock is $40,000. The city will contribute $6,000, Fond du Lac Festivals has committed $5,000 and Merc will pick up the rest. Construction plans have been approved by the city and DNR and construction is expected to be completed by June in time for Walleye Weekend. Fond du Lac Public Works Director Jordan Skiff says now that the channel has been dredged most tournament anglers favored moving the weigh-in back to Oven Island. Merc says the 130 foot by ten foot handicap accessible dock will provide a more efficient and safer system for anglers who leave their boats for the weigh-in after the fishing tournament. “Mercury Marine is pleased to work with the city and Fond du Lac Festivals to build this new dock, which will not only provide an improved site for the Mercury National Walleye Tournament, but will also create a safe and easily accessed fishing site for the Fond du Lac community,” said John Pfeifer, president of Mercury Marine. “We’re proud that the Mercury National is an important part of this community’s history, and this dock will help ensure the continuation of our synergistic partnership.”
